Bacillus anthracis ist ein grampositives, sporenbildendes, unbewegliches Stäbchenbakterium und der Erreger des Milzbrands (Anthrax). Die Sporen sind extrem widerstandsfähig gegen Hitze, Austrocknung und Desinfektionsmittel. Die Infektion erfolgt über Hautkontakt (Hautmilzbrand), Inhalation (Lungenmilzbrand) oder orale Aufnahme (Darmmilzbrand). B. anthracis produziert zwei Exotoxine (Letalfaktor, Ödemfaktor) und eine Kapsel. Die Behandlung erfolgt mit Ciprofloxacin oder Doxycyclin.
